What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, screen, or frame. It is written as W:H — for example, 16:9 means the image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. Unlike absolute pixel dimensions, aspect ratio is scale-independent. A 1280×720 image and a 3840×2160 image both have the same 16:9 aspect ratio despite having very different pixel counts.

How GCD Simplification Works

The simplification algorithm uses the Euclidean Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For 1920×1080: GCD(1920, 1080) = 120. Dividing both dimensions by 120 gives 16:9. The GCD is the largest integer that divides both numbers without remainder. This ensures the result is always the simplest integer ratio — no fractions or unnecessary large numbers.

Common Aspect Ratios and Their Uses

  • 16:9 (1.78:1) — Widescreen HD/UHD. YouTube, Netflix, broadcast TV, most modern monitors and laptops. Resolutions: 1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160.

Letterboxing and Pillarboxing
